How the boat trip works:

You’re picked up from your hotel (south of the island only) and taken to Morro Jable harbour, where you board a fast boat and head out to sea in search of dolphins and whales along the Fuerteventura coast:

  • The trip lasts about 2 hours in total, including the transfer, time at sea and the snorkelling stop.
  • An experienced guide helps you spot the animals and looks after you during the swim.
  • The tour is available in several languages: German, Spanish, Italian, English, Polish and French.
  • Cold drinks on board (food is not included).
  • A stop of about 30 minutes for snorkelling (mask, fins and snorkel provided) in crystal-clear water.
  • This trip is not suitable for children under 3 or pregnant women.

What nobody else will tell you about dolphin and whale watching in Fuerteventura

My aim is to be 100% upfront with you – not to push an activity at all costs, but to make sure you have a great time and don’t come away disappointed. It takes two minutes to read and could save you a letdown: here’s everything you need to know before booking.

  • Sightings are never guaranteed: dolphins and whales are wild animals living free, not in an aquarium. If the crew doesn’t find them on the day, the boat trip and the snorkelling stop still go ahead.
  • This isn’t a gentle cruise: it’s a fast boat, designed to cover a lot of water and track down the animals out at sea. Expect a lively ride, not a relaxing catamaran outing.
  • Pick-up is only available in the south of the island: if your hotel is elsewhere in Fuerteventura, you’ll need to make your own way to Morro Jable harbour.
  • Only drinks are included: bring a snack if you think you’ll get peckish during the 2-hour trip.
  • Not suitable for children under 3 or pregnant women, for safety reasons linked to the speed of the boat and swimming in open water.

What you should know about seasons and weather:

  • September to December: An ideal time! The wind drops and the ocean is calmer (fewer waves), which makes it much easier to spot dolphins from a distance.
  • Spring: It’s breeding season, so a very good time for sightings.
  • Summer: Usually the windiest time of year, but the climate is changing (especially with phenomena like El Niño). The result: some summers are really calm, with excellent conditions for spotting.
  • What happens if the weather is bad? If the wind is too strong and conditions would make the trip uncomfortable or sightings unlikely, the provider may reschedule or cancel it, with a full refund. You can also cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before departure.

Ever wondered why dolphins love swimming alongside boats?

As a boat moves forward, it pushes water and creates an underwater wave that dolphins use to surf along with less effort. But that’s not all: scientists have studied how dolphins behave when they follow a boat – all kinds of jumps, swimming on their side, sudden U-turns and so on. So what’s it all for? Quite simply, to play. Our dolphin friends act just like kids when they see a boat and can’t resist joining in to fool around!

FAQ – Everything you need to know about dolphin and whale watching in Fuerteventura

When is the best time to see dolphins and whales in Fuerteventura?

Whales and dolphins are found off the Canary Islands all year round, whether bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins or large migrating species. What really makes the difference isn’t so much the month as the sea and wind conditions: the calmer the sea, the easier it is to spot them. As they’re wild animals living free, sightings are never 100% guaranteed, whatever time of year you choose.

After the transfer to Morro Jable harbour, you board a fast boat that heads out to sea to look for dolphins and whales along the coast. The experienced guide scans the horizon and adjusts the route depending on the pods spotted. The trip ends with a stop of about 30 minutes for snorkelling (mask, fins and snorkel provided) in crystal-clear water.

Passenger safety and comfort always come first. If the wind is too strong or the sea would make the trip uncomfortable or sightings unlikely, the provider may reschedule or cancel it, with a full refund. You can also cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before departure.

This is a fast boat built to cover distance, not a gentle cruise, so the ride can be livelier than on a catamaran. To avoid feeling queasy, have a light meal before you go, stay out in the fresh air and keep your eyes on the horizon. If you’re prone to seasickness, consider taking something before you board.

This trip is not suitable for children under 3 or pregnant women, for safety reasons linked to the speed of the boat. Otherwise, you’ll need to be able to swim to make the most of the snorkelling stop. If you have a specific question about accessibility for people with reduced mobility, get in touch before booking and we’ll check with the provider.
