🐟 We’re in the Atlantic, not a tropical aquarium: some brochure photos can give the impression of a huge, colourful aquarium. The reality is more nuanced: you’ll certainly see some tropical species, but also fish typical of the North Atlantic, which can sometimes be grey or less spectacular in colour. It’s a nice mix, but prepare for more varied wildlife than some images might suggest.
🚢 Shipwrecks, yes, but not brand new boats: There are indeed shipwrecks to observe, and it’s nice to see. But they are inevitably damaged: that’s precisely what makes them shipwrecks. Expect more pieces of structure on the seabed than an intact ship, but it’s still an interesting discovery.
👪 An activity designed first and foremost for families: It’s especially the kids who find this activity absolutely amazing. On the adults’ side, opinions are more divided: some love it, others are more lukewarm.
💶 The price may come as a surprise for 45 minutes underwater: Some find it expensive for the time spent submerged. Personally, I find this price reasonable given the impressive maintenance costs of this type of facility, as well as the staff needed to operate it.
😊 Staff professionalism that’s sometimes inconsistent: Depending on the day, the welcome can be very warm or a bit more distant. Staff turnover is high in this type of business, which probably isn’t always a sign of the best working conditions, and may explain why some team members don’t always go above and beyond what’s strictly necessary.
⚠️ Feeding the fish, a practice I disapprove of: To attract fish in front of visitors, the team feeds them. This is a practice that is never recommended for wildlife, regardless of the context. As long as no regulation prohibits it, it will probably continue, but I prefer to point it out to you transparently rather than pretend nothing is happening.

The Lanzarote submarine arrived on the island in 1997, at Puerto Calero, where it still operates today. 18.5 meters long and weighing over 100 tons, this submersible cost more than 3 million euros. It is one of the few tourist submarines still in operation in the world: there are only about fifteen worldwide, with most other examples having been built for military rather than tourist purposes.
