Did you think that this wonder of the Canary Islands was only reserved for visitors from the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura?

Well no, from Lanzarote you can also get there from Puerto del Carmen (free shuttle service available if required).

- Los Lobos, what's that? Where is it? Which island?

Los Lobos is a little treasure in the Canary Islands, attached to Fuerteventura. It measures less than 5km2 and is estimated to be around 7,000 years old.
It’s a protected natural park with limited access to preserve it, and there are no cars or permanent residents.

- How does the Los Lobos excursion work?

You will embark in Puerto del Carmen for a 5-hour trip:

  • You’ll board a 50-seater boat equipped with toilets.
  • For 1h30, you’ll sail to Los Lobos, with a view of the Lanzarote coastline and a be sure to keep a watchful eye on the horizon, as dolphins can occasionally be spotted. During the trip, you’ll also benefit from a French, English or Spanish-speaking guide, who will be delighted to give you all the info you need about the island.
  • Once on land, enjoy 2.5 hours of free time to explore the island at your own pace — there’s something for everyone: beaches, hiking trails, lagoons… it’s up to you! Just note that some visitors find the time a little short. A small snack and drinks to take away are offered before your arrival.
  • The return trip takes around 1 hour, and the super-powerful boat you’re in will have no trouble coping with head-on waves, if there are any.

- What to do on Lobos island?

With about 2.5 hours on the island, you’ll have to choose! Here is what I recommend on Lobos island:

  • Climb Montaña de La Caldera (127 m): a 20 to 25 minute walk up from the junction, for a superb view over Fuerteventura, the Corralejo dunes and Lanzarote.
  • Swim at La Concha beach, with calm, shallow water that’s perfect for families.
  • Walk to the Punta Martiño lighthouse, first lit in 1865, in the north of the island.
  • See the old Marrajo salt pans and the small lagoons near El Puertito.

The trail around the island is about 8 km long: allow 1 to 3 hours depending on your pace, according to the official Caminos Naturales network. With 2.5 hours on site, pick either the Caldera or the beach. Be aware that there is very little shade and only one restaurant on the island, with no shop: bring water, a hat and sunscreen.

- Good to know: no paperwork for you

Lobos is a protected natural area, and visitor numbers are limited. The good news: with the trip I offer, the provider takes care of everything, including the access permit. You have nothing to arrange: just book, board and enjoy. On the island, camping is not allowed and you must stay on the marked trails.

Staying in Fuerteventura? Ferries also leave from Corralejo, in about 20 minutes, for €17 return per adult with Naviera Nortour. In that case, remember to apply yourself for the free permit on lobospass.com before you go.
