Tenerife Buggy Tour from Puerto de la Cruz: Coast and Mountain Excursion (approx. 3h)

Dreaming of a buggy trip in Tenerife, around Puerto de la Cruz, to discover contrasting landscapes between sea and mountains on an island packed with hidden treasures, along rural tracks far from the beaches and the crowds? Here, no racing, no rally driving: it’s a guided ride in convoy, at a pace that suits everyone. You get to see the area differently, taking in a traditional banana plantation, tracks through the pine forest and a viewpoint over the Orotava Valley. It’s an adventure open to everyone from age 7 in the back (you must be 18 with a valid driving licence to take the wheel), designed to explore the hinterland of northern Tenerife and its varied landscapes, with no off-road driving experience needed.

- Who can go on a buggy tour in Tenerife from Puerto de la Cruz?

Before you book, let’s make sure you tick all the boxes:

-Drivers must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid driving licence (category B).
-Passengers can take part from age 7, accompanied by an adult.
-Several buggy formats are available (solo, duo, up to 4 seats): check availability for the size of your group.
-This activity is not suitable for pregnant women.

- What nobody else will tell you:

My aim is to be 100% transparent with you: not to push an activity on you at any cost, but to make sure you have a great time and don’t come away disappointed. It takes two minutes to read and saves you any nasty surprises. Here’s everything you need to know before you book:

  • 🚙 A guided ride, not a rally: the pace is adapted to the group, with no chasing speed thrills. Travellers who’ve done this trip mostly mention the friendly atmosphere in the convoy, not a race.
  • 🌋 You don’t go up to Mount Teide: this trip stays in the hills above Puerto de la Cruz, up to around 800 m (pine forest and a viewpoint over the Orotava Valley). Teide National Park is a protected area where off-road driving is tightly controlled: buggies that get close to it almost always stay on tarmac roads. If you’re looking for a trip that climbs up to Teide (over 2,000 m), this isn’t the one.
  • 🚫 No hotel pick-up: unlike some other trips, you need to make your own way to the meeting point in Puerto de la Cruz (opposite the Alúa Tenerife hotel). Remember to plan your journey there and back.
  • 🔞 Driving is for adults only: you must be 18 with a valid driving licence (category B) to take the wheel. Children can, however, come along as passengers from age 7, accompanied by an adult.
  • 🗣️ English- and Spanish-speaking guides: the guides speak English and Spanish. If you need another language, it’s best to check directly with the operator before booking.
  • ♿ Accessibility to be checked case by case: the meeting point is listed as accessible, but the nature of the activity (bumps, off-road) may not suit everyone with reduced mobility. It’s best to check directly with the operator before booking.
  • 🌫️ Dust, and some gear to bring: part of the route is off tarmac, on tracks that can get dusty. Wear closed shoes and, if needed, bring a bandana for your face.

Did you know?

The Canary Island pine you’ll drive through by buggy has a feature that’s unique among conifers: its thick, cracked bark protects it from the heat of wildfires, and it can sprout new shoots straight from the trunk shortly after a fire has passed. It’s an adaptation that lets it survive the fires that regularly hit the archipelago’s forests!

FAQ: Tenerife buggy tour from Puerto de la Cruz

How does a buggy trip work on the day?

You meet directly in Puerto de la Cruz, opposite the Alúa Tenerife hotel (hotel pick-up isn’t included). After a safety briefing, you set off in a guided convoy through the hinterland, taking in a traditional banana plantation, tracks through the pine forest and a viewpoint over the Orotava Valley. Allow around 3 hours in total; the exact route may be adjusted depending on conditions on the day.

Bring closed shoes (compulsory), sunglasses and comfortable clothes suited to the heat. As part of the route is off-road and dusty, a scarf or bandana for your face is a good idea (often on sale on site for a few euros); protective goggles are provided by the team if needed. And don’t forget your driving licence if you’re taking the wheel.

Safety comes first. In the event of strong winds or bad weather, the trip may be rescheduled or cancelled free of charge. For the rules on rescheduling and refunds, plus convoy safety guidelines, see our dedicated article on cancellations, weather and safety on buggy tours.

Although these vehicles are built for off-road terrain, they’re easy to handle. You just need to follow the guide’s instructions and keep your distance in the convoy. To get a feel for the vehicle before you set off, have a look at our practical tips on driving a buggy.

Yes, children can come along as passengers from age 7, accompanied by an adult. Only adults with a valid driving licence (category B) can drive the buggy. The activity isn’t recommended for pregnant women, because of the bumps on the off-road tracks.
