Feeling short on sea air and adrenaline? A dose of jet skiing in Lanzarote is probably just what the doctor ordered…

No way am I taking you for a fairground ride between 4 buoys! Crazy Canary is always on the lookout for the very best for you, which is why I’ve chosen this activity in the form of fast-paced guided rides, so that as well as enjoying the power of these exhilarating machines, you can take in the unusual coastline and spots of your favourite island.

Before you book, let’s make sure you tick all the boxes:

–No licence needed.

-Drivers must be at least 16 years old.

-Passengers: children must be over 8 years old to ride.

–Remember to bring ID (for the driver and passengers): if there’s any doubt about age, it’s the only way to prove the requirements are met. Without it, you may be refused on the day.

-Please note that this activity may not be advisable for anyone with serious back problems, and is not suitable for pregnant women.

- What nobody else will tell you:

My aim is to be 100% transparent with you: not to push an activity on you at any cost, but to make sure you have a great time and don’t come away disappointed. It takes two minutes to read and saves you any nasty surprises. Here’s everything you need to know before you book:

  • We stay offshore, not right up against the rocks: the ride follows the coast, but always at a safe distance from the shore and rocky areas. As no boat licence is needed for this activity, we stick to open water to keep everyone as safe as possible, whatever their level.

  • Photo stops during the ride: several times during the trip, the instructor’s boat stops and asks you to circle around it for photos, which are then offered as an optional (and fairly pricey) extra. That’s normal – it’s part of how the activity works: on a 20, 40 or 60-minute or 2-hour ride, some of the time will be spent on these photos rather than riding. It’s still a good moment – a chance to check out the other riders, have a laugh or swap drivers. Just be aware that it’s not non-stop riding time because of these photo stops.

  • Speed is limited by law, not by lack of power: Spanish law caps jet skis at 50 km/h, no exceptions. That’s plenty to get a real thrill and have fun – unless you’ve ridden in non-EU countries, where machines can sometimes go faster. Here, every operator in the Canaries sticks to this limit. So it’s not about poorly maintained kit or a timid operator – it’s the rule for everyone.

  • Small groups, but a group pace: rides are in groups of up to 4 people per instructor, which keeps things very personal. But if one rider takes much longer than the others to get comfortable, the instructor may encourage them a bit more firmly to keep up, so the rest of the group gets their thrills too. The activity is open to all levels, beginners included, but you’ll enjoy it more if you like speed and adrenaline rather than a gentle cruise.

In 1970, patent in hand, Jacobson approached Japanese manufacturer Kawasaki with his idea. It was warmly received and led to Kawasaki’s first personal watercraft, the “JET SKI“. The first JET SKI hit the US market in 1973.
