Gran Canaria, the island where even the camels look like they’re asking, “Has anyone got a photo of my good side?” But let’s move on to the locals, the Canarios, who juggle the heights of Roque Nublo, wind turbines bigger than your fitness ambitions, and a fiesta that never ends.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Roque Nublo, that imposing stone monolith, is the island’s second-highest point. The locals consider it their very own Everest \u2013 except at the top there are no sherpas, just geckos doing yoga. The tourists climb up secretly hoping for a cocktail bar at the summit, but no \u2013 just a breathtaking view.<\/p>\n

At the airport, the huge wind farm looks like a cosmic dance. It’s as if the engineers played “put them wherever you like” and decided the more the merrier. Who needs old masters when you’ve got turbine blades? Some even say that if you listen carefully, you can hear the turbines whispering secrets about tourists who forgot their sunscreen.<\/p>\n

The Canarios are the undisputed champions of the “Never-Ending Fiesta”. If you need an excuse to celebrate, they’ve got one for every day of the week. Even the iguanas seem to come out of hiding to give disapproving looks to tourists who can’t keep up with the beat. Rumour has it there’s an annual fancy-dress contest between the iguanas and the tourists.<\/p>\n

Speaking of unusual creatures, the lizards \u2013 far more interested in their yoga sessions than in sunsets \u2013 have set up home near Pico de las Nieves. The mountain offers a breathtaking view, although the lizards seem to prefer more relaxing poses to tourist selfies.<\/p>\n

Gran Canaria is a mix of Roque Nublo, wind turbines waltzing in the breeze, and parties where the only rule is to have fun. With their quirky sense of humour, the Canarios invite you to dive into this island comedy where life is one long celebration \u2013 even if the cacti tend to keep their humour on the prickly side.
