In response to imminent rising sea levels, the Canary Islands have decided to take the plunge by offering free scuba diving lessons to their entire population. This ambitious initiative aims to turn residents into fully fledged divers, ready to embrace an underwater lifestyle along Lanzarote’s beautiful coastline.

Temporary dive centres, kitted out with cutting-edge technology, have been set up along the beaches, giving residents the chance to take diving courses for every level. Experienced instructors will guide the trainee divers through practical and theory lessons covering everything from breathing underwater to subaquatic navigation.

Enthusiastic Reactions

Pablo Rodríguez, a lifelong Lanzarote resident, shares his excitement: “It’s incredible to see how our government is turning this threat into an exciting adventure. I’ve always been fascinated by the sea, and now I’ll be able to call it home.”

Ana García, a teacher and mother of two, talks about bringing diving lessons into education: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for our children to learn to live underwater. It completely changes our perspective on the environment, and they’re so excited about becoming little underwater explorers.”

Life Underwater

Once trained, the people of the Canary Islands foresee an underwater life full of possibilities. Innovative underwater habitats are being built, offering comfortable, eco-friendly living spaces. Residents are coming up with creative ways to adapt to this new reality, including underwater farms and aquatic transport.

Carlos Martínez, owner of a local restaurant, shares his plans: “I’m picturing underwater dinners serving local specialities. We’re not just going to survive rising sea levels – we’re going to thrive by creating a unique experience for locals and visitors alike.”

The ever-growing expat community also sees an opportunity to bring a taste of their own cultures to this new underwater life. Underwater cookery classes and subaquatic cultural events are in the works.

As the Canary Islands prepare to face rising seas, they’re showing that adapting can be both practical and creative. Becoming seasoned divers opens up new horizons, and Canarians are getting ready to explore the depths of their future with a boldness that’s capturing the world’s attention.
