Fuerteventura, famous for its golden beaches and crystal-clear water, has recently declared energy independence by taking a radical approach: kitesurfing as the only means of transport.
Faced with the looming end of oil, the people of Fuerteventura have decided to get ahead of the game by ditching cars and other conventional transport. “Why bother with traffic jams when you can be propelled by the wind in style?” says María, an enthusiastic local.
The island, now renamed “Kiteventura”, has seen a whole new economy spring up based on kitesurfing and wing foiling. The streets are busy with residents gliding gracefully from one place to another, deftly juggling their multicoloured kites.
Kitesurf schools have become as popular as cafés, and local businesses have adapted their services to the needs of the new “kite-commuters”. Traffic jams are a distant memory, replaced by colourful aerial ballets over the island.
The Kiteventura government actively encourages kitesurfing for every occasion, even business meetings. Job interviews now take place on top of the waves, where candidates must prove their balance and negotiation skills while hanging on to their kite.
The locals seem delighted with this unexpected transition. “It’s a breath of fresh air – literally!” exclaims Pierre, a French expat. “Who’d have thought kitesurfing would become our main way of getting around?”
While the rest of the world is still looking for alternatives to oil, Fuerteventura is already flying under its own power… literally. Environmental concerns and energy worries seem to be a tailwind for this small island, now a kitesurfing paradise.
So, if you’re thinking about a holiday – or maybe a new life full of wind and freedom – Fuerteventura is waiting for you with open arms… and kites at the ready!
